What is your hair type?

Hair care starts by recognizing your hair type, by matching it with your hair care routine accordingly. It also, helps in choosing the best-suited hair style and color closest to its natural color and texture which is vital. Hair can be catogerized on the basis of oiliness, curls and texture, and various typing systems that are described briefly below:

Hair type based on oil secretions:

  • Dry Hair is usually inherited, but other factors such as over exposure to the sun, usage of harsh shampoo and other chemical treatments can also play a role.
  • Oily Hair is usually accompanied by oily skin. It looks greasy even after shampooing and attracts more dirt.
  • Balanced or Normal Hair is the ideal hair. It is shiny, well balanced and does not look dry or greasy.
  • How to figure out your hair type based on oil secretions? Tap a tissue on your scalp, the second day after a hair-wash. If it has an oil blot, you have normal hair. If the tissue shows nothing, it is dry. If strands stick to each other then your hair is greasy.

Hair type depending on the amount of curl or wave in your hair:

  • Type 1 hair is always straight. There is no curly pattern at all.
  • Type 2 hair indicates a slight or faint wave in the hair.
  • Type 3 hair are curly but not kinky as in type 4.
  • Type 4 hair indicates extremely kinky hair. It typically refers to Black hair/African-American hair.

Hair type according to the thickness and texture of hair:

  • Type A hair is thin and fine and is associated with loose curl pattern.
  • Type B hair is medium textured hair and the curls are “S” shaped.
  • Type C hair is thicker and coarser, with a tight and small curl pattern.
