Holi Skincare: Dermatologist Guide

“Doctor, I have sensitive skin and often experience breakouts from Holi colours. What precautions should I take to protect my skin and hair during the festival?”

Holi, the festival of colours, brings joy and celebration—but it can also be a challenging time for those with sensitive or reactive skin. Synthetic colours, prolonged sun exposure, and over-cleansing often trigger rashes, dryness, and irritation.

Traditionally, natural dyes made from flowers were used to celebrate Holi. Unfortunately, many of today’s colours contain chemicals that damage the skin barrier. At Dermatocare, we want you to enjoy Holi safely. Here’s a comprehensive step-by-step guide to help prevent and manage colour-induced damage to your skin and hair.

One Week Before Holi

  • Avoid skin treatments like waxing, threading, peels, and LASERs that compromise the skin barrier.

  • Begin regular moisturisation, especially if your skin is dry. Hydrated skin is more resilient.

  • Consult a dermatologist if you’re experiencing active skin concerns like acne, itching, or redness.

On the Day of Holi

1. Oil Your Skin and Scalp

Apply coconut oil or a thick body oil from head to toe. This creates a protective barrier that prevents colour from deeply penetrating and drying out the skin.

2. Choose Protective Clothing

Wear cotton clothes that cover most of your body. This reduces the skin surface exposed to colours. Use a cap or bandana to protect your scalp and hair.

3. Shield Your Nails

Trim your nails short, apply a coat of nail polish, and once dry, cover the nail area and cuticles with petroleum jelly to prevent staining.

4. Apply Sunscreen

Colours combined with sun exposure increase the risk of rashes and sensitivity. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) on all exposed areas, including your lips (lip balm with SPF).

5. Choose Organic Colours

Opt for herbal or organic colours to reduce chemical exposure and environmental harm. Investing in skin-safe colours can prevent irritation and breakouts.

6. Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of water, fresh juices, or thandai. Avoid alcohol as it dehydrates the skin further and may worsen post-Holi dryness.

After Playing Holi

1. Dust Before Washing

Gently dust off dry colours using your hands or a soft cloth. Do not rub vigorously.

2. Use Oil to Remove Colour

Apply coconut or olive oil and allow it to sit for 10–15 minutes. Alternatively, apply a homemade pack of gram flour (besan), yogurt, turmeric, and rose water. Let it dry, then scrub gently to remove colour.

3. Bathe with Care

Rinse skin and hair with running water first, then use a mild soap and shampoo. Avoid excessive rubbing, which can worsen skin damage.

4. Moisturize Generously

Post-shower, pat skin dry gently and apply a rich body lotion or cream while the skin is still damp to lock in moisture. Reapply moisturiser whenever your skin feels dry. Consider overnight oiling for hair if it feels brittle or rough.

For One Week After Holi

Focus on soothing and restoring your skin barrier.

  • Use a gentle, soap-free cleanser on the face.

  • Apply a bland moisturiser or cold cream several times a day.

  • Avoid harsh skincare products such as scrubs, toners, bleach, anti-aging creams, skin lighteners, or acidic home remedies like lemon.

  • Minimise sun exposure. Cover your face or use a mild broad-spectrum sunscreen. However, skip sunscreen if your skin feels irritated or burning.

  • Seek medical attention if your skin becomes red, itchy, swollen, or starts to break out.

By following these precautions, you can enjoy Holi without compromising your skin or hair health. A little preparation goes a long way in preventing irritation, pigmentation, and long-term damage. If you have pre-existing skin conditions or a history of allergies, consult your dermatologist before the festival.
